About Us

We've been manufacturing building products for over 30 years, locally made for New Zealand conditions.

Kingspan brings together an integrated product range that provides thermal performance, air control and weathertightness, support and safety.

The Kingspan Thermakraft range is a Kiwi success story that flies under the radar of many home owners. However, in the architectural and construction world, we’re an everyday name that’s trusted with a hugely important job – providing a durable last-line-of-defence layer between the weather and what’s inside.

We firmly believe we’re only as good as our latest batch of underlay. That’s why every batch we produce is quarantined and tested in our lab before it’s released to market. This adherence to quality control is how we’ve earned the unshakeable trust of our customers.

Our history

Founded in 1986 on the back of a small Auckland bituminous building paper company, Thermakraft invested in machinery for mass production and went into full swing in 1988. The modern versions of our original bituminous underlay products are available today as Thermakraft 215 and 213.

Our first laminator for manufacturing synthetic underlays was installed in 2007, opening the door to a new era of ‘smart’ underlays that perform better and are more durable. The arrival of this technology was a catalyst for growing our engineering team, so that we could focus on the design and development of new, superior wrap products. In 2008 our first synthetic roof underlay – Covertek 407 – was enthusiastically received by a market that recognised the benefits of specifying a superior, locally-made product.

In 2011 we advanced our capabilities with the installation of a sonic laminating machine, which converts acoustic vibration energy to heat so that layers of material can be laminated together without an adhesive. This was an exciting time for Thermakraft that consolidated our position as New Zealand’s leading local manufacturer of wraps and underlays.

2014 is a year we’ll never forget. Production came to a sudden halt when a fire severely damaged our premises and destroyed much of our equipment. We worked 24/7 with a local manufacturer to produce new bitumin paper machines along with introducing a new state-of-the-art synthetics laminator. When Thermakraft rose from the ashes, many months later, we were better than ever and our customers came flocking back to the brand they trusted. What’s more, our engineering team were able to take product development to the next level, inspired by the capabilities of state-of-the-art machinery.

In 2018, Thermakraft expanded into Australia with the acquisition of Australian Mesh, a safety mesh manufacturing company with plants in Melbourne and Brisbane. A Sydney location was added to our Australian footprint for the production of underlays. Our first Australian-made synthetic wall wrap went to market in 2019.

In August 2021, Kingspan Insulation acquired Thermakraft Ltd, positioning itself to provide a broader range of solutions to its customers across Australasia. Kingspan is the global market leader in high performance insulation and building envelope solutions, active across 70 countries and 198 manufacturing sites including New Zealand and Australia. The acquisition of Thermakraft Limited is evidence of the positive outlook Kingspan has for New Zealand and its growing demand for higher performing buildings.

Our Values

The values that guide us work both internally and externally. They are the benchmarks we use to measure how we work as a team and how we consistently live up to our clients’ highest expectations.

1. Do the best by each other

Internally we look after each other’s productivity, safety and growth to support personal and business success. Externally we ensure the products we make perform beyond expectations to protect our customers’ outcomes.

2. Always look for a better way

Improvement is part of our culture because we know that moving forward means never standing still. We encourage every member of our team to continuously look for ways to improve our products and systems.

3.  Excellence in everything we do

Every batch of product that comes off our line is sampled and tested in our quality control laboratory before it goes to market. Likewise, every new solution we come up with is rigorously researched before we decide it’s worthy of wearing our brand. Close enough is never good enough for us.

Our team is here to provide knowledge and support to make sure your needs are looked after.
