Scope of use
Vapour Shield is intended for use as a vapour barrier ideally for skillion roof construction where condensation and moisture vapour control are required behind internal cladding. It is laid as a waterproof membrane until the roof is fixed, after which it acts as a vapour barrier layer during its serviceable life.
Where a vapour barrier is installed, its location within the built element is critical - for typical habitable spaces, it must be on the warm side of the element. Incorrect locating a vapour barrier is likely to cause more problems than it solves. When located on the cold side of a building element, the risk of condensation forming on the vapour barrier significantly increases.
To perform effectively, a vapour barrier must also be airtight as typically airflows carry moisture at a much greater rate than diffusion, which. would undermine the effectiveness of the vapour barrier.
General
- Buildings constructed with timber or steel framing.
- Unaffected by LOSP treated timber. However, LOSP treated timber must have. sufficient time for the solvent chemical to flash off in well ventilated area. Recommended minimum 7 days.
- 2.13m x 47m [100m2] unfolded size.
- 140+/- 8 micron in thickness.
- Store on end in dry conditions protected from weather and direct sunlight.
Limitations
- Maximum weather or UV exposure is 7 days.
- NOT a roof or wall underlay for exterior use. Vapour Shield is a vapour barrier layer product used as part of the total building design for specialised applications.
- Must NOT be used under translucent sheeting.
- NOT a fire retardant.
- NOT absorbent.
- NOT vapour permeable.
- NOT self-supporting.
- Must have a minimum clearance of 200mm from the chimney flue.
Internal Moisture
Vapour Shield is not water vapour permeable and so must only be used in buildings with adequate means of ventilation, moisture and condensation control. This must be taken into careful consideration at the design stage.
Compliance
Thermakraft. Vapour Shield will meet the performance requirements of NZBC Clause B2 Durability (B2.3.1.a 50 years), and B2.3.1b 15 years, E2 External Moisture provided the product is:
- Used and installed according to Thermakraft literature.
- Installed MRM Code of Practice.
- Installed. under the guidance of a licensed building practitioner.
- Is compatible with the cladding system used. *
* Roff cladding system compatibility testing must be done first before installation.
